About Jim

I learned screen printing as a Junior in high school. From then until now I have continued my art education; a bachelors degree at UW Madison, three years as an apprentice billboard painter and designer, three semesters at Art Center College in Pasadena and a few specialized classes at Otis and UCLA. I have been an illustrator, graphic designer, owned my own studio in the Los Angeles market for 27 years and was an Art Director at Glowac+Harris+Madison for five years before coming to Madison College full-time in January of 2011.  My experience has been in entertainment and licensing as well as packaging and identity development for high-tech and industrial clients.  Running a business for 25 years with a staff of creative individuals has given me an insight into the ever changing field of communication and the graphic artist’s place in it’s development. I am looking forward to helping to develop Madison College’s continuing excellence in education for this field. I have been a member of AIGA since 1982, was Secretary for the Art Director’s Club of Los Angeles for 1984 and ’85. My band, The Sills, plays original Folk Rock music in the Madison area.
